Stepping into the Corporate world:
Most of us join the corporate world, right after college, with starry eyes and hopeful hearts. In reality, the world of college assignments & examinations is galaxies apart from the world of office deadlines & performance reviews.
The expectations that families, friends and professors have from students vary greatly from the expectations that the employers, colleagues and bosses have from professionals. Even meritorious students with perfect academic records, may fall behind and become unable to cope with the pressures of the corporate ecosystem.
More often than not, the need to prepare for this transition is neglected by us. Students and educational institutions tend to focus on examinations and campus placements, while companies tend to focus on occupational training. Hence, there is an incredible need for students to develop the essential competencies to evolve into a true professional and thrive in the business world.
So, how do you go about it?
1) Understand that cracking the interview may be tough, but ‘making-it-big’ as a professional or an entrepreneur is even tougher!
It is not just enough to make good impressions during the selection process. You must perform consistently to remain ‘relevant’ and prosper in the cut-throat world of corporate competitiveness.
2) Invest in YOURSELF
Build a keen sense of self-awareness, leverage your strengths and work on your areas of improvement. This is a gradual process, and although results may take time, they will stay with you forever.
Don’t just follow degrees, diplomas & certifications. Some skills and knowledge areas are worth learning, just to be a better YOU and a successful professional.
3) Communication skills are the key to the top
Whether you’re a born chatterbox, or shy and introverted, you must train yourself to be an effective communicator. Remember, that even some of the world’s greatest orators like Winston Churchill, had to overcome severe speech impediments.
4) Read, read, read!!
There is no alternative to reading. No matter how many videos you watch or podcasts you listen to, there is no better way to gain knowledge, than good old reading. Be it books or newspapers or magazines (not that kind!), make it a habit to read every day. And yes, e-books and online reading counts as well! Duh!
5) Be prepared for difficult conversations & workplace conflicts, not just difficult interviews
Conflicts are an intrinsic part of our lives. Especially in today’s workplaces, which are increasingly diverse and competitive. You must learn to manage and overcome these conflicts and not let them hinder your performance. In fact, conflicts can also be great learning opportunities!
